Make sense of an unexpected legal bill

Gather the right paperwork and understand your options for challenging fees.

If a legal bill is unclear or higher than expected, start by comparing it with the information you were given about costs. Ask the firm to explain the difference.

Bring the paperwork together

  • Your client-care letter, terms of business and costs estimate.
  • Any updates about changing costs or the scope of work.
  • The bill, payments made and relevant correspondence.

Ask specific questions

Identify the charge you do not understand, why it differs from your expectations, and what explanation or correction you want. You can raise this through the firm’s complaints procedure.

Consider the available routes

The Legal Ombudsman may be able to consider an eligible complaint about fees. Court assessment of a solicitor’s bill is a separate process with its own rules, time limits and potential costs.

Do not assume that a complaint to the firm pauses a deadline for challenging a bill in court. Get prompt independent advice if you are considering that route.
